Launching Into Independence: Octagon Coaching House

High school graduation is an exciting time. But once the celebrating is done, and the tassel has claimed its rightful place hanging from the rearview mirror, it’s time to focus on the future. 6-12 months after graduation are crucial in any young adult’s life.

The path leading to adulthood is fraught with challenges that often overwhelm recent graduates. Challenges like time management, finding a job, navigating new relationships, feeling disconnected, and housing instability can take their toll and paralyze a young adult to the point where he or she might feel unable to make decisions about their future. This can lead to feelings of confusion, stress, and uncertainty.

One of the challenges–housing instability–is especially difficult to overcome. That’s where Octagon Mentoring can make a difference. We offer transitional housing to help young adults ease into adulthood one step at a time.

What is Transitional Housing for Young Adults?

The primary goal of transitional housing is to provide structure and guidance to help young adults launch successfully into independent living.

Moving out on your own is a big step, and many young adults need some type of support and structure as they transition from living at home to living on their own. The Octagon Coaching House is a fully furnished mentoring house that helps bridge the gap between living at home and living independently.

The Benefits of Structured Living in the Octagon Coaching House

The Octagon Coaching House offers fully furnished rooms. These rooms are available to rent for either short or longer periods of time and offer the following benefits:

  • Fully furnished, private room
  • Contracts and leases are customizable – stay as little as three months, or go longer if you like
  • Tenants work with a mentor to develop necessary life skills

Access to support from mentors helps young adults foster self-sufficiency, confidence, and independence. Mentors work with each tenant to set goals, provide feedback and counsel, and provide accountability. With the ultimate goal that at a future date, the need for scaffolding will be eliminated as the young adult moves out and transitions fully to living on their own.

The Role of Mentorship in Transitional Living

At the Octagon Coaching House, all tenants are required to work with a mentor. Our mentors are life coaches who specifically work with young adults. Although Octagon coaches don’t live at the Octagon Coaching House, they have access to the house for regular check-ins.

The role of mentorship in transitional living is to help young adults develop skills, navigate challenges, and achieve their goals by providing customized feedback, sharing knowledge and experiences, and helping each tenant set and achieve goals that will help each young adult in our care become more competent in independent life skills development.

5 Life Skills Taught at Octagon

Healthy Self-care Practices

Our mentors take great care to teach and model healthy self-care practices, like getting enough sleep, eating healthy food, managing stress, and finding the right balance between work and play.

Time Management

Your young adult may be managing a lot more than just a school schedule. With work, social activities, keeping in touch with family and friends, and work, time management skills are a must. There are only 24 hours in a day, and an Octagon coach can help your young adult find and implement systems of time management.

Goal Setting

Most things we accomplish in life take planning. Goals also create meaningful work. An Octagon mentor will help your child make sustainable goals and break them into actionable steps.

Accountability

Everyone needs an accountability partner, and with an Octagon coach, you’ve got one right next door. Whether checking in on homework or talking through how to adjust goals that seem just a bit out of reach, an Octagon mentor is a sounding board and positive partner that can help your child develop accountability. We’re good at giving pep talks, but we’re also good at giving grace. Developing the necessary life skills to succeed in life takes time, patience, and practice.

Confidence

The way to gain confidence is through building new skills. Thus, as your child works with an Octagon mentor, his confidence will slowly increase as he gains life skills that will help him succeed during his stay and serve him well as he transitions into adulthood and beyond.
